Consumers that regularly use a credit card for everyday spending often look at credit card cash back offers. Can earning through spending really work?

Although some consumers only use their credit cards for occasional purchases, many will use them for general spending. This can be easier than carrying money around and the consumer will simply settle up their bill once it comes in every month. But, using credit card cash back offers may be a way of making money from spending. These cards basically pay the user whenever they use their card. Is this worth looking at?

How do Credit Card Cash Back Deals Work?

These deals are essentially tied to the spending that is made on the card. The consumer is given the chance to make money whenever they buy something. This is usually based on a percentage basis. So, for example, a 1% offer will give the consumer 1% of their spending back.

This is often paid into their account according to the schedule laid out in their agreement. In some cases the deal may involve earning reward "points" rather than money. These can usually be redeemed with a variety of retailers.

What Kinds of Rewards Deals are Available?

Deals can vary here depending on which credit card provider is used and which product is taken out. These can include:

  • Introductory offers: Here the card company offers a higher percentage cash back for a short period before the deal reverts to its standard percentage.
  • Partner deals: In some cases the base percentage may be increased for spending in specific stores or on specific products. This may be a permanent deal or may be given as a special short-term offer.
  • Online deals: Some cards will, once again, increase the percentage given if their customers shop online via specific stores or a designated shopping portal.

While these may look like good deals on paper, they won't necessarily suit everyone.

Things to Consider Before Applying for Cash Reward Credit Cards

This kind of deal works best for those with clean credit records who pay off their credit card bill in full every month. Some cards of this type can come with higher interest rates than standard cards. It is not recommended, therefore, to be used as a debt management solution as spending to earn money in this way is unlikely to address debt problems and could make things worse.

Consumers wishing to try out this kind of card may be wise to check that there are no caps on potential earnings and that they aren't given a time limit for redemption. Shopping around and comparing cash back credit card deals may also help find the best offers with the most acceptable terms.
