A new Web guide to age-related deals gives frugal shoppers hundreds of ways to get cheaper prices on hotels, car rentals, food, clothing, movies, dining and medicine.

“50 Plus Deals” is a Website that costs nothing to join and offers boomers and seniors hundreds of serious discounts and savings advice on everything from Jiffy Lube to Westin Hotels, from Kroger and Ralph's supermarkets to walking canes, from dating services to Wells Fargo banking services. The site went live in November, 2008,

The listings can be browsed or searched by the age at which they are available (over 50, 55, 60 or 65) or by subject. “No one pays us to be listed, and we have a continuous updating process,” said co-founder Chris Travers. The site is different from SeniorDiscounts.com, the biggest in the age-related field, which charges a fee for most access.

“50 Plus Deals” has 13 major product and service categories. Here are examples in each:

  1. Caregiving – 1st Senior Care, DiabetesStore.com
  2. Education and Careers – audit courses at several universities such as University of Connecticut and University of Illinois for as little as $15
  3. Entertainment and Leisure – shopping discounts at Ebags (luggage) , Staples, T.J. Maxx, restaurant discounts at Applebee’s and Bennigans
  4. Family and Relationships – Match.com dating introductory %15 off
  5. Financial Services – Senior American Express Gold card members get extra cards for family members of any age for $25.
  6. Fitness and Anti-Aging – discounts on initiation fees at Gold’s Gym and Bally Total Fitness
  7. Health – lower prices on hearing aid and orthopedic devices
  8. Housing and Real Estate -- $3000 off options or design studio selections at Toll Brothers, the leading luxury home builder
  9. Legal – free private courtroom for dispute resolution meetings
  10. Publications – deep discounts on magazine subscriptions
  11. Technology and Auto -- money off on Web site consultations, %10 off parts and services on a Saturn
  12. Travel – as much as %50 off cost of certain Hyatt hotel rooms when available
  13. Your Home – plumbing, hardware and even possible Home Depot offers

Some of the discounts offered 50PlusDeals.com are similar to those offered by AARP or other organizations, and may include offers made on some coupon Websites. But its owners point out that “finding ways to save money is like finding a needle in a haystack,“ whereas 50PlusDeals.com organizes discounts by category and by age grouping.

The site includes an Amazon store as a convenience to shoppers. And Vice President of Marketing Robin Colner said she hopes it will prompt the creation of new age-related discounts . “For example, we couldn’t find any 50 plus discounts on teeth whitening, so we invite suppliers to create new incentives.”

There are specials on the site that have been negotiated by the site’s developer. But as Andrew Garvin, market research expert and CEO of PreRetirement Resources Group, which is a part owner, says: the key to uncovering age-related discounts is simply to ask for them–every time from every vendor. “If you don’t ask, you don’t get. If you do ask, you are bound to save a lot of money.”
