Believe it or not, Applebee's began in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1980, under the name of T.J. Applebee's Rx for Edibles & Elixirs. That mouthful of a name was changed to Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar, after Bill and T.J. Palmer sold the restaurant concept to W.R. Grace and Company. The first Applebee's franchise was opened by Abe Gustin and John Hamra, who also became the owners of the company in 1988.
Applebee's began functioning as Applebee's International, Inc. in 1989, when it became a public offering under the symbol APPB. In 2000, the corporation became International, as it expanded to the Middle East and Latin America. In 2004, Applebee's added the popular innovations of Carside To Go pickup service and a joint effort with the diet franchise Weight Watchers, to include lower fat food items to the menu. Applebee's now boasts over 1,900 locations in the U.S and Internationally.

Applebee's Coupons and the Bookworm Reading Club
Because of the already affordable food at Applebees, it is often difficult to find coupons, and many are only found locally. Applebee's partners with some local schools to reward children in the Bookworm Reading Club. When a child has completed reading ten books, they will receive a bookmark and a coupon for a free meal, with the purchase of an adult meal.

Coupon codes are frequently found on RetailMeNot website. The codes are the online version of a paper coupon, and are placed in a designated box during the Online checkout process or copied and taken to the restaurant. Recent Online codes were for $5.00 off lunch. Check the sites regularly, to see what new offers are available.
