Christmas Thrift Store Shopping for Children
There are a variety of items that are appropriate for children's gifts, some in perfect condition, others needing a little touching up to make them look like new.
Animals that are plastic or stuffed may need a little touching up. Using nontoxic paint on the plastic ones can make them look like new with little effort. Stuffed animals can be made to look like new by adding colorful ribbons or perhaps a doll's dress or hat.
Backpacks and handbags are usually found in abundance in thrift shops. Little girls love purses and teenagers enjoy having a variety of backpacks. Look them over for worn spots and also inside to make sure they are clean or can easily be touched up to make them look like new.
Bicycles are often donated to thrift shops after a child has outgrown them. However, those that show signs of being used can be touched up with paint and tires replaced if needed.
Board games can be tricky because sometimes pieces are missing. If the games are taped over it is wise to purchase two of them just in case something may be needed to complete the game. Also, some game manufacturers have sites on the internet where missing pieces can be purchased.
Books that have names inscribed in them can be covered with colorful Christmas mailing labels. If the front cover is worn, it can be covered with bright looking paper that can be found at craft stores.
Dolls are always welcome by little girls and at times, those still in the original boxes are available. If a doll shows signs of wear, try to envision how it can be made to look like new by being cleaned up or with new clothing.
Clothes are often the best buy for children's Christmas gifts at thrift store. They are usually donated when outgrown and still in excellent condition. Look items over carefully, looking for such things as missing buttons, tears, faded or worn spots and zippers that do not work. There are many ways clothes, such as jeans, can be dressed up by adding trim. Almost any item of clothing can be made more interesting by adding to them with a bit of lace or other trimming that can be found in most yardage stores.
Electronics should be given special attention before purchasing. A small screwdriver can open any compartments, such as where the battery is located to see if it is corroded or damaged by leaks. Some battery cases can be cleaned if not too badly damaged. Bring batteries with you and if permitted by the thrift shop, try out the toys to make sure that if making noises or showing flashing lights still work.
Stocking stuffers can be found in thrift stores by just looking around and using some imagination. Some stores have bargain counters where small items have been marked down that fit well into a Christmas stocking.
The finishing touches on gifts for children can also be found at thrift shops to be used for creative packaging. Colorful wrapping and ribbons can add to the excitement of opening the presents on Christmas morning.
