Periods of unemployment can be stressful. Even if an individual qualifies for benefits, with the first check comes knowledge that the last one will come all too soon. In North Carolina, anyone who receives standard unemployment benefits should expect to receive checks for 13 – 26 weeks while they search for new employment.

Extended Unemployment Benefits in NC

For some individuals who still have not landed a new job in the original unemployment benefit period, certain additional benefits may possibly be available.

Extension of Unemployment Benefits in North Carolina

Once regular unemployment benefits have been exhausted, some individuals who received unemployment compensation from the state of North Carolina are eligible for additional benefits.

The first type is called Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008, or EUC08. These extended unemployment benefits are available to eligible individuals for up to 33 weeks. This type of unemployment compensation has been available since July 12, 2008 and will be available through June 5, 2010. Not everyone automatically receives this extension of unemployment benefits, but those who do can possibly get up to 80% of their original eligibility. Under this extension, the same work search requirements apply and recipients must continue to file weekly certifications.

NC Unemployment Extension Available Due to High State Unemployment Rate

Once regular unemployment benefits and EUC08 have been exhausted, some individuals may apply for additional extended benefits authorized by the state during periods of high unemployment. These additional extended state benefits have been available since October 2008. United States Unemployment Benefits – Federal Additional Compensation

For weekly pay periods beginning February 28, 2009 and ending July 3, 2010, qualifying individuals will also receive an additional $25 per week in Federal Additional Compensation (FAC). This amount should be added to the individual’s regular payment amount.
