Clipping coupons may save money, but there are less time consuming ways to stretch the food budget.

Rising food prices have forced the majority of shoppers into budget mode. Luckily there are still several ways to save on the food bill that don’t involve setting aside an entire Saturday to clip, sort and file coupons. For more ways to save money at the grocery store check out the tips below.

Buy Generic Brands To Save More

Supermarkets usually manufacture their own brand of products. Simply switching to the generic grocery store brand can save a bundle on each bill. Often the brands that are more familiar are just that, more familiar. Try out other cheaper products to assess their quality and capitalize on the savings every month.

Check the Bottom Shelves for Bargains

Nothing is left to chance in supermarket product placement. That is why those individual-sized chocolate bars and gossip magazines are positioned next to the check out counter. The less expensive items are usually placed on the bottom shelves and the more expensive brands are at eye level so stooping down can uncover a world of savings.

Comparison Shop to Get the Best Price

It is possible to compare different brands within the same store or to visit different supermarkets to get an idea of which has the better bargains. Taking the time to calculate price per unit can also help increase savings.

Make a List… and Stick to it

Walking into the grocery store without a list these days is like going to war without armor. Checking the pantry before stepping out prevents double buying and having a list ensures the shopping trip is focused and may greatly reduce impulse buys. When grocery shopping is done with a list much less is spent overall than if it was done off the cuff.

Buy Items that are In Season to Save More

Instead of gravitating towards the same fruits and vegetables, try using only what is in season. Fruits and vegetables that are out of season or exotic are more expensive because they have likely been shipped long distances. Buying locally grown produce can generate great savings.

Don’t Shop on an Empty Stomach to Avoid Spending Recklessly

Lastly, never shop on an empty stomach. This is a bit of shopping psychology but it actually works. Hunger pangs make it difficult to focus and there is a greater temptation to rush through the aisles picking up unnecessary items along the way. Hunger also creates cravings for items that may not ordinarily make it on the list so again there is a tendency to spend more. To avoid spending carelessly ensure grocery shopping is always done on a full stomach.

It is possible to get everything that is needed without spending exorbitant amounts of money, or giving up precious free time clipping coupons.
