A family of three can live off $340.00-$400.00 or less a month. Here is how to save money while grocery shopping.

Every little thing a person does to save money will add up when grocery shopping. There is no need to spend $1,000 a month on food, and in some cases more. People need food to live, but why is it many in America go hungry?

Tips on Saving Money on Grocery Bills

  • Buy in bulk and clip coupons whenever possible. When purchasing bulk items one can usually save quite a bit of money compared to buying smaller serving items. Good candidates for bulk buying are dry goods, fruits, and nuts. Avoid buying prepackaged foods like prepared spaghetti, ravioli, and cereals. They are easy and cheap to make. The same can be said of snack items like peanut butter crackers, they are easy and inexpensive to make at home.
  • Buy cheap food, avoid things on eye level shelves and end caps. These areas are usually filled with the most expensive food items. Buy by weight not by serving amounts.
  • Take into account also places like Ebay and Amazon. These places usually have very good deals on dry goods, even after shipping. Remember to add the shipping into the price though.
  • Buy foods that really fill the belly. Things high in good fiber like oatmeal and rice will keep a person full longer. Avoid fluff foods like candies and doughnuts as they will not last very long on the stomach and leave people picking through the cabinets too soon.
  • Save leftovers, as these little items can make an entirely new meal the next day.

Grow Your Own Food to Save on Grocery Bills

Yes, it is simple and has been said before. It is true though so needs mentioning again. If a person can have a decent-sized garden and then freeze, can, and dehydrate the excess foods they would not have to buy much from the grocery store. Raising chickens, hogs, and rabbits is also a very cost efficient way of having one’s own meat and eggs.

Plant fruit and nut trees now for future harvests; one decent sized walnut tree can produce countless pounds of healthy fat and nutrient rich nuts. Miniature trees are available for the consumer now as well. This allows those with even small yards to grow their own fruit.

For people that grow their own food, a completely new world is open to them. They can trade and share their excess with other growers and be sure they have plenty of variety in their diets. Extra food can also be donated to charity food kitchens so that people with no land can have fresh and delicious groceries.

With the addition of free grocery coupons even more savings can add up. There are numerous free coupon websites online that offer free coupons for printing and free coupons that can be mailed to a person's house. Some websites would have a person pay for a subscription but this fee is usually quite nominal and worth it because of the savings to be had with their coupons.
