Good Energy Management is Good Money Management

Good energy management within the home will save a minimum of £250 per household per year in the United Kingdom or around $180-$220 per year in the United States.

Tops Tips to Save Money on Utility Bills

  • Leaving appliances on standby wastes billions in energy bills annually worldwide, always turn appliances off.
  • Switch all electrical appliances off at wall sockets where possible.
  • Energy saving light bulbs use around a quarter of the power of standard light bulbs and last eight times longer.
  • Switch all lights off upon leaving a room.
  • Turning heat thermostats down by 1 degree will barely be noticed but will save money on utility bills. The recommended temperature for a living room is 21 degrees C, and 18 degrees C for a bedroom.
  • When using central heating programmers, set heating and water to come on when required rather than all the time.
  • Washing machines should always be run with a full load, wash at 30 degrees C if possible as modern detergents are far more efficient. A cooler wash will be a quarter of the price of the hottest cycle.
  • Always unplug mobile phone and laptop chargers when not in use.
  • Only boil the amount of water required in kettles- it takes a lot of electricity to boil a kettle.
  • Buy only A+ rated appliances, for maximum savings on utility bills.
  • Where possible, turn off heat in rooms that are not used.
  • Close curtains/drapes to cut out cold drafts.
  • Draft proof windows and doors before winter every year.
  • Keep external doors closed as much as possible.
  • Conservatory and sunroom doors into the home should be kept closed at all times.
