Families can save at the grocery store with these tips for food shopping. Try avoiding processed foods, buying in bulk, buying store brands and using coupons.
Much of the money an average family spends each month is fixed. Little can be done to decrease the amount spent on a mortgage, average utility bills, car payments and various insurance premiums. However, money spent on groceries is not fixed, and families can save hundreds each year in this area. Everyday millions of families are looking for ways to save money. Money may be tight because of a job loss or decrease in pay. A family may also be trying to save money in order to purchase a new home, finance a college tuition or plan an upcoming vacation. These tips will show families how to get by on less or add to their savings each month. Saving Money By Avoiding Processed and Frozen FoodsForgoing processed, frozen and ready to make foods will save money. Dinner preparation may take a little more time and energy, but the savings will be worth the extra time. Take french fries for example. A one pound bag of fries generally cost $2 or $3 and may only be enough for one dinner. However, a 5 pound bag of fresh potatoes also costs $2 to $3 and may last for 5 dinners or more. Another benefit of making homemade dinners is the increased nutritional value. Processed foods and dinner kits tend to be higher in fats, sugars and sodium. Saving Money By Buying in BulkAn often cited money saving tip is to buy in bulk. However, many people believe that they must get a membership at a "warehouse" retail club, often costing $40 or more per year. Similar savings can be found by just buying the largest bulk size found in the local supermarket. Always compare the price per ounce or the price per unit when buying in bulk. Stores often offer sales only on a smaller sized package, making it cheaper to buy several smaller items rather than buying in bulk. Saving Money By Buying Store BrandsMany store brand items are identical in quality to their name brand equals, and may be as much as half the price. Staples such as flour, sugar, pasta, rice, beans and canned fruits and vegetables may be indistinguishable from their name brand counterparts. Families should try various products to determine whether they enjoy the store brand or would rather spurge for the name brand equivalent. Saving Money By Using CouponsA family who only buys store brand items has no use for coupons. However, many families have some favorite name brand items, and the store brand just won't do. This is where coupons come in. Buying the Sunday paper is the best way to get valuable coupons, but many online cites offer printable coupons as well. During tight economic times, families may feel pressured to save money wherever possible. Families may also be interested in decreasing their spending to add to their savings. By avoiding processed food, buying in bulk, buying store brands, and using coupons, families can decrease their spending at the grocery store.
