Money management is critical. Learn how to keep a checking account in proper order with a few simple steps.

Bounced checks and extra expenses are the price many people pay when they don't handle their checking account properly. The ability to manage a bank account is a vital responsibility. Learn how to "clean up" the mess, and avoid the unnecessary stress of a financial blunder with these simple and effective tips.

Ways to Maintain a Solid Account

  • The most basic and elementary way to maintain a structured account is to keep good records. If an individual is fully aware of their situation, they'll know if anything out of the ordinary is taking place. It is important to keep simple handwritten or computer records of the account. When dealing with a bank account, knowledge is king.
  • If someone received a letter from their best friend or family member, would they put it aside? No. The same can be said for a bank statement. An individual is best advised to open the letter as soon as possible and examine the statement. Look over the statement thoroughly and contact the bank immediately if an error has occurred.
  • Make sure the balance, credits, interest paid, current balance, etc, are all in proper order. This is yet another reason why it's vital to keep personal records and stay observant of the situation. It's easy to spot an error, when a person stays in touch with their account standing.
  • If a person has an interest bearing account, it’s wise to check the daily balance. Some customers must maintain a minimum balance, and keeping tabs on their situation is vital. The average person doesn't need to check their balance on a daily basis, but those with interest bearing accounts or those who must maintain a minimum balance are the exception.
  • When an individual simply wants to make sure critical payments were received and posted, it's wise to monitor the account between statements. If the customer wants to be kept aware of random/unusual transactions or payments, monitoring the account between statements is a very wise decision.

Checking Account Responsibility

When a person is just starting out in the “real world," keeping track of their checking account is easy because it’s paramount. The person has been given a new responsibility, and it’s only human nature to want to take care of what’s new.

However as time passes, many people throw the basics aside. Though some of these steps may seem unnecessary and compulsive, these overall tips can help a person maintain an honest and solid checking account. Never let an account get out of control due to inconsistency and irresponsibility.
