Reaching Financial Goals by BudgetingUsing a Budget to Save Money, Spend Less, and Control Finances
Budgeting helps people to manage their money and save more on a regular basis. Whatever the goal, it can be achieved by knowing how to make the most of a budget.
If asked for their financial goals, most people would say one of two things: to save more or to spend less. Budgeting can help people to reach those financial goals, but only if they follow some rules for sound budgeting. Devote Time to the Budget DailyIt may seem laborious at first, but make time for the budget every day. It might help to keep the budget in a visible place. Some days it will only require a few minutes to record daily purchases; other days will require more time for evaluating spending patterns and making new financial goals for the following month. Setting goals but then forget about the budget for weeks on end doesn't mean much progress, so it's a good idea keep financial goals fresh in the mind by quickly reviewing your budget every day. Accurately Record ExpendituresA budget is useless if a person is just guessing or keeping incomplete records of their daily expenses. The best way to be accurate is to be diligent about recording all financial activity. A good time to record expenses is at the end of the day when everything is still recent. Saving receipts, using carbon-copy checks, or verifying accuracy with a credit card statement may also promote accuracy. Set Monthly Money GoalsThe point of a budget is first to understand and then take control of one's own spending. Once a person understands their spending patterns, they can start challenging themselves with monthly financial goals. Whether the goal is to decrease discretionary spending or to increase the amount they contribute to their 401k, a budget can help them accomplish it. Set concrete, measurable goals. "Save more" is not a good goal; "save $50 a month" is a great one. Start small and take gradual steps toward the ultimate goal. Focus on one or two goals at a time and don't demand perfection. Spending Money is Okay SometimesRemember that money is a tool, the purpose of which is to help people provide for their needs and enjoy themselves. Saving money is a good thing, but it should not come at the expense of a person's quality of life. People should live within their means and certainly save money for an emergency, but they should also allow themselves a special treat every now and then. Becoming too ascetic will only lead to burnout and frustration instead of a feeling of satisfaction at having set and reached financial goals.
