Book lovers know that their favorite hobby can challenge the budget and space in the home. There are many ways to save money, and to make room for some new favorites.
Inexpensive solutions include using the library, purchasing used books, downloading free EBooks, selling your books, and trading books. Inexpensive Solutions The library is an inexpensive solution to purchasing books. And when finished with the books there is no worry of making space for them in the home. Many libraries have online catalogs, allowing patrons to place books on hold and pick them up within a prearranged time. To take advantage of your library, write down the hours and stop by once a week to drop off and pick up materials. This will help to prevent late fees. DVDs and books on tape or CD are often available as well. And many libraries also provide books by mail service for senior citizens or disabled persons. Used BooksIf the library doesn't have the right selection of books, used books are another option for saving money and can be purchased in a number of ways. Used books stores, online book stores and thrift stores are all good places to purchase or swap used books. Don't limit yourself to online books stores that sell only used books. Stores that sell new books often have a used book option available for purchases and sales. Free EBooksEbooks are another option for lightening the weight on the bookshelf and the budget. Many are available free in pdf format, and can be read either on a reader or on a pc. TextbooksTextbooks can be a major expense for college students and homeschoolers alike. College students can search for less expensive textbooks online as well as in the student bookstore. And homeschoolers may find the library to be as good a book resource as purchasing used from other parents. Sell Books, Swap BooksSelling your books is another way to fund additional book purchases. Buying and selling at the same venue may lead to discounts or early buying options. Trading books with friends, fellow church members, or in used book stores or coffee shops provides another way to read without spending any money. Hidden CostsWatch out for hidden costs. Taxes and shipping charges vary depending upon location. In general, purchasing from a vendor located closer to your residence will be more cost effective than purchasing from a vendor whose book would need to be shipped further to reach you. Although taxes, original price, and shipping method can sometimes cause a vendor located on the other side or the country, or even the world to sell you a book for a lesser price than your local book dealer - so check before you checkout. Unintended ConsequencesSaving money on books can lead to positive unintended consequences. Recycling books is good for the environment. And trading books may give you a chance to meet people.
