Saving money doesn't have to be just about the individual. Simply using energy saving light bulbs and car pooling are great money saving tips that make the difference.

We live in an age where most people are interested in helping the environment or at least say that is the case. What if there were things you could do that could benefit both the environment and your own personal finances?

Ecological Ways to Save Money

Following these simple lifestyle changes can make a real and lasting impact on both your personal finances and the environment in which we live. Even if it isn't practical for you to implement them all, just a few will be of benefit.

Car Pooling

The majority of people drive to work. Driving can be a very costly business, especially in an age of high petroleum prices. Why not take it in turns to pick up your colleagues? This could cut your transport costs by as much as 75%.

Buy Second Hand Items

Buying second hand clothing on Ebay or items from the local charity shop can be a great money saving tip. For example, buying a second hand cabinet can save hundreds, not to mention many trees. Buying second hand clothes from the charity shop can also benefit the less fortunate.

Energy Saving Light Bulbs

Energy saving light bulbs have an estimated life span of over 10,000 hours which is about 10 times longer than traditional bulbs. What's more, they also consume 80% less electricity which helps reduce costs and carbon emissions.

Electronic Equipment on Standby

If you aren't using your TV, don't leave it on standby. If you aren't benefiting from what you are using, you are vastly better off just turning it off. This can really help keep your electricity bill down.

Bank Statements

Instead of getting traditional paper bank statements, why not get electronic ones instead? This will save countless tress and some companies even reduce your monthly bill slightly for choosing this option.

Regular Hot Baths and Showers

Almost 50% of all the water used is as a result of taking daily showers. Try to cut back on the amount of time you spend there. A good way to achieve this objective is through not leaving the shower running whilst you are brushing your teeth or fetching your clothes from the other room.

Roof and Flooring Insulation

Heat is always escaping from homes. It is worthwhile consulting the local council regarding the possibility of getting a grant to make your home more eco friendly. These are generally available for both walls and roofing.

Carrier Bags

A lot of stores are starting to charge their customers 5p for the provision of carrier bags. If you take a few bags out with you it can only be beneficial. Tesco will also provide club card points for the re-cycling of carrier bags.

High Consumption Cars

If you don't require a a big car, why not switch to one with a smaller engine? Some of the smaller cars can get up to 45 miles from each gallon of petrol. This could cut your fuel costs by as much as 70%.

Use Water Filters Instead of Bottled Water

Buying bottled water is all the vogue. However, having huge trucks transporting this around is not ecologically friendly. Buying a water filter prevents the need for these trucks, bottle wastage and will also save you money.
