There are many ways to lower costs around the home. Some of these are better known than others. Here are some common ones and some not-so-common ones.

There are many ways to keep a personal home budget low. There are some very simple strategies and habits that can be implemented into an everyday lifestyle that will make budgeting easier and lower overall expenses.

Reducing Grocery Costs

Yes, groceries are part of the household expenses. When buying groceries there are a few simple tips that can help keep costs down:

  • Never buy more than is needed. This means make a list and stick to it! Also don’t shop while hungry as this tends to make people want more food (especially easy or junk food).
  • Compare prices. Usually the generic product is cheaper and just as good a quality. But not always! Sometimes brand names are on sale for better prices.
  • Find the best store. This means use the grocery store that has the overall best prices for the types of foods the household consumes. This might mean shopping at two stores in order to save. That can actually save a significant amount of money.
  • Beware of bulk. Unless an army is being fed bulk foods can actually cost more! Not only do they suck up the cash flow, which can be used to eliminate useless expenses, such as credit card debt, but unless the family actually consumes it all in a timely basis a lot of bulk food ends up getting thrown away. Be aware of what the real consumption needs are!

Savings on Lawn and Yard Care

Don’t overdo it on yard care. It’s okay to let the lawn go for an extra couple of days. This can not only save on labour, but the fewer times it is mown, the less it costs in power or gas if a power mower is used. Better yet, use a mower that consumes no power!

Weed by hand. Sure it’s a little more work. But it gives a greater sense of accomplishment, is good for the body, and cuts down on the expenses and risks associated with weed killers and plant poisons. It can also be a time to bond with family members.

Get rid of the snow blower. Not only will this cut down on power costs, as well as bring in a couple of dollars for the blower, but the exercise is great for the body and soul! Too many people today aren’t getting enough exercise and changing lifestyles to allow for more in everyday activities also cuts down on gym membership expenses.

Reducing Costs of Household Cleaning

Firstly, don’t go overboard. No-one’s house needs to look like it’s a model for a catalogue. Use natural cleaners wherever possible. It’s surprising what a little lemon juice can do. And just plain old soap, too! Sweep instead of vacuuming when possible. And the best is if people clean as the mess occurs. This means picking up right away, wiping things immediately, and putting things away. This avoids clutter, dust and dirt. And it makes it less expensive than going on cleaning binges! It’s less stressful, too.

Better Budgeting for Home Repairs and Maintenance

Keep the house in good repair and maintenance! It is often less expensive to make little repairs and do regular maintenance than it is to end up making a big repair when something breaks down or goes wrong. To save money, learn to do basic repairs and upkeep for the home. These are usually fairly simple to do and public libraries carry a lot of books on how to do pretty much anything that needs to be done around the house.
